Drinking: Riding the Fine Line

Without a doubt, we’ve all had our fair share of drunken nights and messy mornings. Every guy has at least once experienced the elevating effects that a drink (or a few) can bring to your personality and your confidence. Yes, your chest suddenly gains size, you feel more comfortable and your smooth-talking skills increase tenfold – or at least, so you think.

The truth is that going out and being sociable often pairs hand in hand with consuming alcohol. It makes social scenarios less daunting and can help to take the edge off when you’re in uncharted territory with regards to connecting with new people. But, there is a fine line between being charmingly mellow and messy drunk. When you’ve had one – more like three – too many, you cannot pick up on social cues anymore, and you go from being confident to being a mess. To avoid this, here are some tips on staying on a good level when drinking and making the most of it:

  1. Do not mix! I repeat, DO NOT MIX. When going out, choose one drink and one shot type that you’ll be sticking to. Choose one type of drink that you’ll be sipping on all night and the same for shots you’ll be taking (which you inevitably will be doing). Nothing makes booze go to your head faster than mixing different kinds of alcohol. If you are having cocktails, make sure that each one you have is made with the same base liquor. For example, a whiskey sour and an old fashioned are made with whiskey and bourbon respectively. We can mix these, as they fall into the same category of alcohol.
  2. Eat something before or while you are out. Drinking on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster. Getting a good meal in helps to ensure that you won’t be caught unawares by that seemingly innocent shot of tequila your friends bought for you.
  3. Hydrate. A good rule of thumb is to have one glass of water for every one drink you consume. Doing this will keep you from becoming dehydrated and lessen the headache you’ll have in the morning. You’ll also be able to stay on a good level and not run the risk of passing your limits. So, after you smash that beer, reach for a glass of water to keep yourself in that sweet state of inebriated bliss.

As for how often you should be drinking, try to limit your drinking to one social night a week. If Friday night drinks are your thing, perfect. But don’t let Friday night’s exploits roll over into Saturday and leave you bed stricken for your entire Sunday. Your weekends are precious, so make the most of them.
